Core Beliefs
I believe in the genius and promise of the founding of our country, specifically in the freedoms - endowed by our creator - enshrined in our constitution. No other nation in the history of the world has offered more freedom, more opportunity, and more prosperity to her people. The role of our government is to protect and preserve our freedoms, and it should be limited to that purpose, kept in check by the people. Government works for us, not over us.
Those same freedoms come with responsibilities, and we don't talk about that nearly enough. Our founding fathers wanted an engaged, educated, and informed electorate who were willing to serve this nation so we could keep our freedoms. Freedom of speech, the freedom to bear arms, and all the other freedoms in the bill of rights come with responsibility. Because we are personally responsible for our lives, I believe in the promise of the American Dream, and that each of us can forge our own path that will lead to happiness, peace, and prosperity.
Those points lead to the principle of self-reliance. This is the Utah way - we are the beehive state and our state motto is "Industry." The pioneers who came to this beautiful desert created a thriving community because of their hard work and determination. Utahns don't need to turn to the government for all our answers, instead we look to ourselves, our families, and friends for strength. Surely people sometimes need a hand up, but that is different than a handout. While democrats would like us dependent on the government, I believe people thrive when they find those passions that drive them individually.
Finally, I fundamentally believe that together we can bridge the political chasm that is separating and dividing us as Utahns and as Americans. We have far more in common than what may separate us ideologically. It is time to come together, have meaningful conversations about the challenges we are facing, and respect one another enough to find common ground to continue moving Utah forward as we lead the nation in freedom and opportunity. Civility and conversation, seeking to understand those with whom we disagree, so that we can heal our nation and provide opportunities for our children and grandchildren must rule the day.
